Privacy Policy for UPI Payment Alert

We built UPI Payment Alert as a helpful, independent soundbox utility for Indian shopkeepers and merchants. We are not data hungry: your payments, customer names, and bank alerts never leave your phone.

1. Our Purpose: A Helpful Tool, Not a Surveillance Platform

Traditional fintech hardware soundboxes require recurring monthly rentals (₹125–₹150/month) and stream your shop's turnover details into corporate analytics pipelines. UPI Payment Alert & Soundbox was created by Arvind Ji to give merchants complete autonomy.

The app turns your existing Android smartphone into an offline soundbox speaker that speaks incoming payments out loud in Hindi, English, and regional accents without charging monthly rental fees and without collecting your financial records.

2. What Information Is Processed and Stored

To provide voice announcements and a helpful merchant ledger, the app processes the following data:

  • Payment Transaction Records: Credit amount, customer/payer name (when provided by PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, or BHIM), timestamp, and payment application source.
  • Bank Transaction References: Transaction reference number (UTR) or last 4 digits of the bank account credited, as received in official bank SMS alerts (e.g. SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis).
  • Merchant Customizations: User-selected speech engine, announcement language (Hindi/English/Hinglish), Bluetooth volume boosts, and merchant categories.
  • Optional Store Counter Location: If you manually enable counter mapping, location coordinates are stored locally to group payments by your counter or kiosk.

Where is this stored? All records reside in an encrypted SQLite database stored in your phone's secure private directory (/data/data/com.arvind.upipaymentalert/databases/). No employee, developer, or external company has access to this data.

3. Device Permissions & Why We Request Them

Android requires explicit permissions for background soundbox operations. Here is an honest breakdown of every permission:

Notification Access (NotificationListenerService) Required
Allows the app to listen for incoming payment notifications from PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, Cred, and banking apps. When a payment notification arrives, the amount and sender are read to trigger the voice announcement. Non-payment notifications (personal chats, social media, OTPs, system alerts) are instantly discarded in memory.
SMS Read Permission (RECEIVE_SMS / READ_SMS) Complete Edition Only
Provides a vital offline dual-channel fallback. In crowded markets or areas with weak internet, push notifications often fail. The SMS parser reads incoming bank credit alerts directly so your soundbox still speaks. Personal text messages and OTPs are ignored. (Note: The Play Store Edition does not request this permission).
Bluetooth & Audio Routing Optional
Enables the app to route spoken voice announcements to your shop's Bluetooth or USB soundbox speaker, and temporarily override silent mode so you never miss an alert in a noisy shop.
Battery Optimization Exemption (REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS) Required
Prevents Android OS battery savers from killing the soundbox background listener when your screen is locked.

4. Zero Data Sharing & Third-Party Services

No Analytics SDKs
We do not integrate Google Firebase Analytics, Facebook SDK, or adjust trackers in production builds.
No Cloud Transmission
The app operates without making outbound HTTP requests with your financial turnover.
No Data Monetization
We never sell, rent, broker, or monetize your transaction histories or customer lists.
Local Speech Engines
TTS voice synthesis runs on Android's built-in offline speech system (e.g. Google TTS offline voice pack).

5. Your Rights: Full Ownership & Data Deletion

Because your records live entirely on your own phone, you retain 100% control:

  • Export Anytime: You can generate clean CSV or HTML statements of your collections directly from the app's settings menu.
  • Manual Deletion: You can delete individual transactions or reset the entire ledger at any time.
  • Permanent Removal: Uninstalling the application from your Android phone instantly purges the local SQLite database and all cached files.

6. Security Measures

The application relies on Android's application sandboxing architecture. No other application installed on your device can read the private SQLite database without root privileges. Backups exported by the user are saved only to locations explicitly selected via the Android Storage Access Framework (SAF).
